Prints

This is a set of 3 prints that feature different techniques and subjects. The process of printmaking is very fascinating to me and holds a lot of parallels to graphic design. Both processes can create large editions and require a thorough amount of thought and decisive planning. Not only do they have similar processes their histories are interconnected; graphic design arose out of printmaking.

Madman’s Eyes

This is a woodblock color reduction. 4 colors were used in the creation of this print consisting of three shades of red and an orange. The print was made for a print exchange with the theme, “Fantasy.” I chose to print a genie, a fantastical and benevolent trickster.

Peril at Sea

Peril at Sea is a black and white intaglio engraving. The theme for this project was “Fairytales.” I chose to depict the Kraken, a perilous sea monsters from the tall tales of bygone sailors. Intaglio is a process consisting of creating a negative image with an acid resistive material on a copper plate and then exposing the plate to the acid. The acid etches small lines that hold ink which can then print the positive image.

86 Degrees

86 degrees is a 4 color linocut reduction print. The title of this piece remarks about the temperature outside when the reference photo was taken. This print is inspired by a recent trip I took to southern Arizona. The foreground subjects, the Sonoran cactus and the Palo Verde trees were rendered true to the photo while the background is more of an abstraction. It was nighttime when the photo was taken.
