Sequential Figure & Ground

This design began as a series of digital sketches consisting of letterforms combined with other letterforms. These sketches explore the Gestalt principles of closure, proximity, alignment, similarity, and continuity. Other sketches in the beginning of my design explored composition. Using the word “typography” required experimentation with several ways of creating movement, value transitions, and rhythm. By combining these experiments in Gestalt principles and composition structures, several dynamic design iterations were developed. With the process of refinement and additional experimentation, a final design that spelled “typography” right-side up and forward as well as upside down and backwards was created. All of the letters in the final design accomplish strong figure-ground relationships and follow a flowing sequence.
